This is who i am

Amy Phillips

WELCOME

My modus operandi for a long time has been to figure out what I love to do because I’m going to be doing it until the day I die. I’m still a work in progress but I know for sure that as I age I want to be surrounded by people who love me and whom I love in return. I believe that living in community, at least in some fashion, is an essential component to living a healthy happy life. Much of my work stems from this belief, along with my deep desire to help and inspire people to STAY healthy as they age.

This means healthy inside and out. How you’re feeling in your interior, including in relationship to the people in your life. It’s also your exterior – the physical space you’re living in and the work you do in the world. I’ve spent the last three decades doing my own deep work and I bring the wisdom I’ve gleaned to everything I engage with.

One blog. every WEEK. for a year.

This is an experiment, to see if it’s true that people behave better when they’re being watched. A friend proposed this recently and I think it might be true.

For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to be surrounded by like-minded people doing work I love that makes a difference. Part of my handicap has been what I call a “don’t-look-at-me-gene”. This presents like a lot of busy work in support of other people’s projects, the ability to deftly shift the onus of attention onto the other, and keeping my own longings so deeply buried that not only can I not share them, I can’t actually access them myself.

So this year I am committed to exploring these deeper desires. I have no idea where the journey will lead me but a wise therapist once said ‘We’ll know that you’re done when you’re happy in love and happy in work.’ That’s what I’m aiming for.

There is no doubt that the world needs our individual and collective genius, yet we are stopped by out-dated beliefs about who we are and what we’re capable of. It’s time to step beyond our comfort zone and explore the many ways we can be a contribution – to each other, to the planet, and to generations yet to come.

JOIN ME ON THE JOURNEY

My plan is to share how I’m doing on my quest to become a) more visible and b) as healthy as I can by the time I turn 65 — one year from the day this site goes live. I’ll be sharing with you what I’m learning, where I’m challenged, what I’m inspired by, and how much I would love you to become involved in ways I can’t quite yet articulate.

I do know we need each other. There is a loneliness epidemic happening on the planet and it’s only going to get worse. And there are so many brilliant people doing creative and innovative things! How do we find each other? How do we create the kinds of communities we long for?

This and more will be the topic of future offerings and I would love it if you joined me. I have no idea where it might lead but for the longest time I’ve imagined some kind of hub that would help us find one another. A matching service, if you will. I do know there are many ways to collaborate with people to create living environments that enrich all of our lives and this will be at least part of my focus moving forward.

If expanding your community is of interest to you, whether you know what that looks like or not, please sign up and join me on this adventure. I would love to have you along!

MORE ABOUT ME

I’m an experiential learner and a reasonably quick study. Project management (aka chaos management) has been my bread and butter since long before I launched my consulting company in 2002.

I developed a love for new buildings and all things construction working on projects at UBC. I also managed a somewhat radical (and extremely successful) experiment of renovating the rental home we in live in partnership with the owners. It was an amazing experience and a lesson in trust for all of us.

My other love is that of deep, transformational personal work. Training with Integral Coaching Canada was pivotal in this realm and earning the designation of Integral Master Coach™ in 2012 was one of the hardest yet most significant accomplishments of my adult life.

For the last several years my attention has been drawn to the aging, death and dying field. It is immense! Otto Scharmer’s U.Lab has been incredibly beneficial and I am partnering with several different groups to see what expanded community might look like.
